Purchasing and Caring for Pet Birds

A practical handbook on nutrition, housing, behavior, preventive care, illness recognition, emergency response, and household safety.

1. Pre-Purchase Information

Companion birds can be intelligent, social, long-lived animals whose needs differ greatly among species. Before acquiring a bird, consider expected lifespan, adult size, noise level, social and behavioral needs, housing requirements, diet, veterinary access, and the amount of daily interaction the species requires. Large parrots can live for decades and may require substantial long-term planning.

Choose a reputable source that can provide accurate information about the bird's species, age when known, origin, diet, health history, and identification. Whenever practical, consider adoption or rehoming through a reputable rescue. Avoid purchasing a bird that appears ill simply in the hope of treating it later.

A newly acquired bird should receive a veterinary examination promptly, ideally by a veterinarian experienced in avian medicine. If other birds are already present in the household, discuss quarantine and disease-screening recommendations with the veterinarian before allowing direct contact, because appropriate quarantine duration and testing vary with species, source, and exposure history.

Warning signs at purchase include persistent fluffing, closed or dull eyes, nasal or ocular discharge, labored breathing or tail bobbing, marked inactivity, poor appetite, a soiled vent, abnormal droppings, wounds, swollen feet, or marked loss of breast muscle. Birds often conceal illness, so apparent normality does not replace a veterinary examination.

2. Nutrition

Nutrition must be tailored to the species. For many companion parrots, a high-quality formulated diet is generally preferred as the nutritional foundation, supplemented with appropriate vegetables and other fresh foods. Seed- and nut-heavy diets are commonly deficient in important nutrients and may contribute to obesity, hepatic disease, atherosclerosis, and other disorders.

Seeds, pellets, and fresh foods

Seeds and nuts may be appropriate in limited amounts for many species but should not automatically be the major component of a parrot's diet. Formulated diets should be chosen for the species and life stage. Fresh vegetables and safe leafy greens add variety and enrichment; fruit is generally offered in smaller quantities because of its sugar content. Species such as lories, lorikeets, toucans, softbills, finches, and other non-psittacines have different nutritional requirements and should not be fed a generic parrot diet.

Dog food, cat food, monkey chow, dairy products, and human snack foods should not be used as routine nutritional substitutes for a balanced avian diet. The older practice of routinely using yogurt or milk as calcium or probiotic sources is not recommended.

Foods and substances to avoid

  • Avocado, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, and highly salty foods.
  • Fruit pits and seeds known to contain cyanogenic compounds, such as those from peaches, plums, cherries, and apricots.
  • Moldy, spoiled, or contaminated food.
  • Foods exposed to pesticides or other chemicals.
  • Excessively fatty or sugary human foods.

Supplements

Routine vitamin, mineral, amino-acid, calcium, or iodine supplementation is not appropriate for every bird. A bird eating a nutritionally complete formulated diet generally should not receive additional vitamins unless a veterinarian identifies a specific need. Excess supplementation can be harmful. Vitamins should not routinely be added to drinking water because they may alter water intake and promote microbial growth.

Budgerigars with iodine deficiency may require iodine supplementation, but iodine should not be dosed routinely by owners without veterinary direction. African grey parrots can develop calcium-related disorders, but treatment and prevention should be based on the complete diet, husbandry, and individual medical assessment rather than indiscriminate supplementation.

Water and grit

Provide clean, fresh drinking water and wash food and water containers regularly. Potable household tap water is generally acceptable unless local water quality is unsuitable. Sweetened water, juice, milk, or honey-water should not be used as routine hydration.

Parrots and other birds that hull seeds do not require grit for digestion. Routine grit is unnecessary for companion parrots and excessive ingestion can cause gastrointestinal problems. Whether grit is appropriate for other species should be discussed with an avian veterinarian rather than assumed.

Changing a Poor Diet Safely

Diet conversion is usually safest when it is treated as a gradual learning process rather than a sudden substitution. The exact method should be adjusted for the species, age, current diet, body condition, medical history, and the bird's willingness to try unfamiliar foods. Birds that are underweight, ill, very young, elderly, or already losing weight should be evaluated by an avian veterinarian before a major diet change is attempted.

Before starting

  1. Choose the target diet first. For many companion parrots, this means an appropriate formulated diet together with species-appropriate fresh foods. Other bird groups may require very different diets.
  2. Obtain a baseline weight. Use an accurate gram scale and record the bird's weight at approximately the same time of day, preferably before breakfast. Also note the bird's usual appetite, activity, and normal number and appearance of droppings.
  3. Make sure the bird is actually eating well before conversion begins. A bird that is already eating poorly should not have its familiar foods reduced until the reason for poor intake is investigated.

A practical step-by-step approach

  1. Introduce the new food while the familiar food is still available. Place a small amount of the new diet in a separate dish or mix a small amount with familiar food so the bird can see and investigate it without losing access to foods it already recognizes.
  2. Use the bird's normal feeding times. Offer the new food when the bird is naturally interested in eating, but continue to provide enough of the familiar diet to maintain adequate intake.
  3. Make the new food easy to investigate. Try the pellet size or texture best suited to the species. Some birds respond to pellets placed on a flat surface, offered by hand, lightly moistened, or presented as part of a foraging activity. Never leave moistened food in the cage long enough to spoil.
  4. Demonstrate that the food is safe. Social birds may become interested when they see a trusted person or another healthy bird appearing to eat the food. Food can also be placed near a favorite feeding location or foraging area.
  5. Increase the new diet gradually. Once the bird is reliably eating the new food—not merely playing with it—slowly increase the proportion of the new diet while decreasing the old diet. Conversion may take days, weeks, or occasionally longer.
  6. Do not confuse crumbling with eating. Pellets broken into pieces on the cage floor do not prove that sufficient calories have been consumed. Weight, droppings, behavior, and direct observation of swallowing are more useful indicators.
  7. Continue offering safe fresh foods. Vegetables and other species-appropriate fresh foods can help broaden food acceptance, but they should not displace the nutritionally important part of the diet.

Monitor the bird every day during conversion

During an active diet change, weigh the bird daily or as directed by your veterinarian and keep a written record. Monitor appetite, activity level, droppings, and the amount of familiar and new food actually consumed. A meaningful downward trend is more important than a single isolated weight.

Stop reducing the familiar diet and contact an avian veterinarian if the bird is losing weight, producing noticeably fewer or smaller droppings, becoming quiet or weak, sitting fluffed, or showing a clear decrease in food intake. A rapid weight loss of roughly 5–10% can be clinically important, but the acceptable change depends on the individual bird; do not wait for a specific percentage if the bird appears ill.

Do not use starvation as a conversion technique

It is unsafe to assume that a hungry bird will eventually eat an unfamiliar diet. Some birds will refuse unfamiliar food long enough to become dangerously ill. If a bird will not accept the new diet despite repeated gradual attempts, an avian veterinarian can help design a conversion plan and determine whether medical, behavioral, or husbandry problems are interfering with the transition.

3. Cage and Housing

The enclosure should be large enough for the species to move, climb, stretch both wings fully, and use multiple perches without the tail or wings continually contacting cage surfaces. Width and usable horizontal space are particularly important for species that move and fly laterally. Bar spacing must prevent the head from becoming trapped.

Use bird-safe materials and avoid cages or hardware that may expose the bird to lead, zinc, flaking paint, rust, or unsafe solder. Perches should vary in diameter, texture, and orientation. Natural branches from correctly identified, non-toxic, pesticide-free trees can be useful when properly cleaned. Do not spray branches or perches with insecticide or mite products simply as a preventive measure.

Use plain paper or another safe, easily changed substrate on the cage floor so droppings can be monitored. Sandpaper cage liners and sandpaper-covered perches can injure the feet and should be avoided.

Provide toys and opportunities to chew, forage, climb, and manipulate objects. Inspect toys frequently for loose threads, frayed rope, small openings, sharp edges, toxic metals, or parts that could entrap toes, tongues, or beaks. Rotate enrichment rather than overcrowding the enclosure.

4. Environment

Companion birds benefit from social interaction, predictable routines, opportunities for exercise, adequate sleep, and species-appropriate enrichment. Many parrots require substantial daily interaction and foraging activity; some finches and other social species benefit from compatible avian companions.

Place the enclosure where the bird can participate in household life without constant disturbance, smoke, cooking fumes, drafts, or excessive traffic. Natural light can be beneficial, but direct sun must always be balanced with access to shade and protection from overheating. Outdoor exposure requires protection from predators, escape, weather extremes, pesticides, and contact with wild birds.

There is no single temperature or humidity range that is ideal for every pet bird. Healthy birds generally tolerate gradual changes better than sudden extremes. Sick birds may require supplemental warmth, but temperature support should be individualized and overheating must be avoided.

Provide a consistent dark, quiet period for sleep. Many companion parrots do well with approximately 10–12 hours of uninterrupted nighttime rest, although species and individual needs vary.

5. Droppings

Monitoring droppings is useful because changes can reflect food intake, hydration, gastrointestinal function, urinary output, and disease. Normal appearance varies with species and diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables can increase the liquid portion of droppings without causing true diarrhea.

Seek veterinary advice for persistent changes in color, consistency, volume, frequency, odor, blood, undigested food, or a marked reduction in droppings—especially when accompanied by reduced appetite, lethargy, vomiting or regurgitation, weight loss, or respiratory signs.

6. Parasites

Internal and external parasites occur in companion birds, but risk varies widely with species, origin, outdoor exposure, contact with other birds, and husbandry. Diagnostic testing should be selected according to the individual bird rather than performed or treated empirically in every patient.

Scaly face and scaly leg disease caused by Knemidocoptes mites is particularly associated with budgerigars and canaries. Other mites, lice, protozoa, and helminths may occur. Do not apply over-the-counter insecticides or parasite products without veterinary guidance because birds are sensitive to many chemicals and dosing errors can be dangerous.

7. Mentality, Social Needs, and Enrichment

Birds are behaviorally complex animals. Good welfare requires more than food and a cage: opportunities for social interaction, movement, foraging, chewing, problem-solving, bathing, training, and choice are important. Enrichment should match the species and individual bird.

Rotate safe toys and foraging activities, provide predictable routines, and use positive-reinforcement training. Sudden changes in behavior, social withdrawal, aggression, excessive vocalization, feather damage, or repetitive behavior may indicate medical disease, environmental stress, or both and should not automatically be assumed to be “behavioral.”

8. Longevity

Many companion birds are long-lived, and lifespan varies greatly by species, genetics, nutrition, husbandry, and veterinary care. Small passerines may live for years, while many parrots can live for decades. Prospective owners should plan for the possibility that a bird may outlive changes in housing, employment, family circumstances, or even its original caretaker.

9. Care and Grooming

Beak and nails

Healthy beaks and nails grow continuously and usually wear through normal activity. Overgrowth can reflect husbandry problems, liver disease, malocclusion, trauma, or other medical conditions. Trimming should be performed only when needed and by someone trained to avoid pain, bleeding, or structural injury.

Feathers and bathing

Regular bathing or misting can support feather condition when enjoyed by the bird. Avoid oils, ointments, or greasy products on feathers unless prescribed, because they can damage plumage and interfere with insulation. Abnormal molt, persistent baldness, broken feathers, or feather loss should prompt veterinary evaluation.

Feet and legs

Vary perch diameter and texture and keep perches clean. Foot sores, swelling, lameness, pressure lesions, or changes in grip require veterinary assessment. Leg bands should not automatically be removed from every bird; they can provide important identification. Bands that are poorly fitted, damaged, trapping debris, or causing injury should be evaluated for safe removal. Microchips may be appropriate for some larger birds.

Do not forcibly peel thickened scales from the legs or feet. Excessive scaling can be associated with mites, chronic irritation, nutritional problems, or other disease and should be diagnosed before treatment.

10. Weight and Body Condition

Regular weight monitoring is one of the most useful tools for detecting early illness in birds. Use an accurate gram scale and record the bird's weight under similar conditions, ideally at the same time of day. A bird's weight can fluctuate modestly, but a persistent downward trend or a sudden change deserves attention.

Body condition is also important. Obesity can occur even when the scale seems stable, and weight loss may be masked by fluid, masses, or enlarged organs. An avian veterinarian can show owners how to evaluate pectoral muscle condition safely.

11. Feather Facts

Feathers provide insulation, flight surfaces, protection, communication, and species-specific display. Normal preening helps maintain feather structure. Many species have a uropygial gland, but feather waterproofing and maintenance depend on feather structure, preening, bathing, nutrition, and overall health rather than simply on oil coating.

Molting patterns differ by species, age, reproductive status, environment, and health. A molt should not automatically be considered a period of illness. Marked feather abnormalities, abnormal pin feathers, widespread breakage, self-trauma, or failure to replace feathers normally warrant evaluation.

12. Behavioral Problems

Feather damaging behavior

Feather damaging behavior is not simply a “vice” caused by stress. It can result from dermatologic disease, pain, infection, nutritional disease, endocrine or reproductive factors, environmental problems, inadequate enrichment, anxiety, learned behavior, or combinations of these causes. A veterinary examination should precede or accompany behavioral treatment.

Psittacine beak and feather disease and other infectious disorders may be considered when clinically appropriate, but testing decisions depend on species, age, exposure history, and examination findings.

Excessive vocalization

Vocalization is normal communication. Excessive or problematic calling should be evaluated in the context of species, social needs, reinforcement history, sleep, environmental triggers, and health. Rewarding quiet or desirable behavior is generally more effective than punishment.

Biting

The beak is used for exploration, balance, climbing, communication, and defense. Learn the bird's body language and avoid forcing interactions. Positive-reinforcement training and teaching voluntary step-up or stationing behaviors are preferred. Sudden aggression can also be a sign of pain, reproductive behavior, fear, or illness.

13. Determination of Sex

Some species are sexually dimorphic and can often be sexed by appearance, while many parrots cannot. Color mutations, age, and individual variation can make visual sexing unreliable even in species with typical external differences.

DNA sex testing using an appropriate blood or feather sample is now widely available and is generally preferred when sex needs to be known. Endoscopy or surgical sexing is reserved for situations in which direct examination of the reproductive tract is medically justified or provides information beyond simple sex determination.

14. Handling and Restraint

Birds should be handled as calmly and briefly as possible. Positive-reinforcement training can teach many companion birds to step onto a hand, perch, scale, or carrier voluntarily, reducing the need for physical restraint.

When restraint is necessary, avoid compression of the chest and abdomen because birds rely on movement of the sternum and body wall for ventilation. Towels can be useful when used correctly, but forceful gripping of the head or neck is not appropriate owner instruction. Sick or dyspneic birds can deteriorate rapidly during handling and should be restrained only as necessary by experienced personnel.

15. Alertness Is the Key to Bird Health

Birds commonly hide signs of illness until disease is advanced. Owners should know the bird's normal weight, appetite, activity, vocalization, posture, respiratory pattern, and droppings so subtle changes are noticed early.

The Association of Avian Veterinarians recommends regular veterinary checkups for companion birds. The examination and any laboratory screening should be individualized; a fixed 24-hour dropping analysis and a fixed blood panel are not necessary for every clinically normal bird at every visit.

  • Reduced appetite or fewer/smaller droppings.
  • Weight loss or reduced breast muscle.
  • Fluffed posture, excessive sleepiness, sitting low, or staying on the cage floor.
  • Reduced activity, talking, singing, or interaction.
  • Open-mouth breathing, tail bobbing, wheezing, voice change, or increased respiratory effort.
  • Vomiting, regurgitation outside normal behavior, bleeding, seizures, weakness, or loss of balance.

16. Stress and Adjustment

Stress can result from transport, unfamiliar surroundings, inadequate sleep, social isolation, crowding, fear, poor nutrition, pain, illness, inappropriate handling, or sudden changes in routine. Modern companion-bird care should focus on minimizing unnecessary stress and allowing gradual acclimation.

The older version of this handbook described lengthy import and quarantine chains that were common in the historical pet-bird trade. Today's sourcing, legal requirements, and conservation concerns differ substantially. Whenever possible, obtain birds from legal, reputable, welfare-conscious sources and discuss quarantine of new birds with an avian veterinarian before introducing them to an established flock.

17. Respiratory Problems of Birds

Birds have a highly specialized respiratory system with lungs and air sacs and no diaphragm. Respiratory disease can progress rapidly, and excessive restraint can worsen respiratory compromise.

Emergency warning signs include open-mouth breathing, pronounced tail bobbing, cyanosis, weakness, collapse, marked change in voice, persistent wheezing or clicking, or inability to perch normally. These signs warrant prompt veterinary evaluation.

Diagnosis may involve observation, physical examination, imaging, blood tests, cytology, culture, endoscopy, infectious-disease testing, or other procedures depending on the individual case. Nasal discharge is not automatically cultured, and antibiotics should not be selected without consideration of the likely cause and appropriate diagnostics.

18. Taming and Training Birds

Allow a new bird time to acclimate, but avoid rigid rules such as waiting exactly two weeks before beginning all interaction. Training can begin with calm presence, preferred treats, and simple voluntary behaviors as soon as the bird is comfortable enough to participate.

Use positive reinforcement to teach stepping onto a hand or perch, entering a carrier, stationing, accepting a towel, or stepping onto a scale. Keep sessions short and stop before the bird becomes fearful or fatigued. Do not use darkness, food deprivation, intimidation, chasing, or forced contact as routine training tools.

Gloves are not inherently forbidden, but they can frighten some birds and are unnecessary for most routine companion-bird training. Safety equipment may be appropriate for dangerous species or specific clinical situations when used by experienced handlers.

19. Bird Diseases: Which Signs Are Emergencies?

Because birds can deteriorate quickly and often conceal illness, a bird that is visibly weak, unresponsive, unable to perch, sitting on the cage bottom, having difficulty breathing, bleeding significantly, seizing, repeatedly vomiting, prolapsing tissue, or suffering major trauma should be treated as an emergency.

Animal bites are particularly urgent even when puncture wounds look small. Cat bites and scratches can introduce bacteria capable of causing severe systemic infection. Fractures, burns, toxin exposure, head trauma, and uncontrolled bleeding also require prompt veterinary care.

The older handbook advised routine corticosteroids and antibiotics for trauma and shock. Those recommendations are no longer appropriate as generalized first aid. Medication choice, fluid therapy, analgesia, oxygen, antimicrobials, and anti-inflammatory treatment should be based on the injury and administered by a veterinarian.

20. Emergency Care Until the Bird Reaches a Veterinarian

  • Warmth: A sick bird often benefits from a slightly warmer environment, but avoid improvised sealed plastic “incubators” and monitor closely for overheating. Panting or holding the wings away from the body can indicate excessive heat.
  • Quiet: Minimize handling, noise, and visual stress. Keep the bird in a secure carrier or small hospital cage when appropriate.
  • Food and water: Place familiar food and water within easy reach if the bird is alert enough to eat safely. Do not force-feed or tube-feed unless trained to do so; aspiration and crop injury can be fatal.
  • Bleeding: Apply gentle direct pressure with clean gauze when possible. Persistent or substantial bleeding requires emergency veterinary attention.
  • Do not give: human medications, alcohol, oils, laxatives, antibiotics, steroids, or other drugs unless specifically directed by a veterinarian for that bird.

21. Toxic Substances and Household Dangers

Birds may be exposed to toxins by chewing, ingesting, contacting, or inhaling hazardous substances. Because reliable toxicity data are incomplete for many plant species, treat unidentified plants as potentially unsafe until verified.

Important household hazards

  • Overheated non-stick/PTFE-coated cookware and appliances
  • Smoke, vaping aerosols, carbon monoxide, and combustion fumes
  • Aerosol sprays, perfumes, solvents, paint fumes, and strong cleaners
  • Lead and zinc from old paint, hardware, solder, stained glass, jewelry, weights, and some cage materials
  • Rodenticides, insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers
  • Human medications and improperly dosed veterinary medications
  • Avocado, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, and excessive salt
  • Moldy seed, spoiled food, and contaminated water
  • Tobacco and nicotine products
  • Unsafe plants, bulbs, seeds, or plant parts

If exposure is suspected, remove the bird from the source when it is safe to do so and contact a veterinarian or animal poison resource promptly. Do not induce vomiting or administer home remedies unless specifically instructed.
